I’m 16, I weight 151 lbs. My life long dream is to be a horse racing jockey. Do you think it’s possible?
Here is everything you need to know to become a jockey and what they get paid. Good luck to you.
You need to be at least sixteen years of age.
The first thing you need to know is as much about horses as possible. Know breeding aspects, training, how horses run under what conditions.
Get to know the industry, trainers, hot walkers, grooms, etc. Get to know other jockeys an get tips on how they got their start.
Watch your weight. In most countries a jockey can never weigh more than 115 pounds. You have to maintain weight in order to meet weight requirements..
Most jockeys start by working in other aspects of the training process. They hot walk horses (cool them down after training) grooming and participate in exercising duties long before they actually become a jockey. They get to know the profession and decide if this is the career they want to have.
You need to go to Jockey School such as Frank Garza Jockey School in Southern California. There are also jockey schools like Chris McCarons in Kentucky..
Going to jockey school is not required, but if you are not Grandfathered into
it, it is a big plus. If you can already ride and can pass the test by the
stewards, it is not necessary.
You start by running schooling races. These are races that help you get familiarized with racing and track facilities, and prepare you to become a jockey. Often this is required before you can obtain a jockey license.
You must have a license in order to be a jockey. Most racetracks provide applications and the license is good for any racetrack within a given area. Recommendation from a trainer to jockey school is a huge plus.
Jockeys are paid on a per mount (race) basis. The fees are between $30 per mount and $100 per mount depending on the purse structure at each particular track. Those are the fees jockeys receive if they do not finish first, second or third. The jockey of the winning horse receives an amount equal to 10% of the winning owner’ s share of the total purse. (The winning owner in most states receives 60% of the total purse.) The second place jockey receives 5% of the owner’ s share of the second place purse money. (The second place owner receives 20% of the total purse in most states.) The third place jockey receives 5% of the owner’ s share of the third place purse money. (The third place owner receives 15% of the total purse in most states.) The most successful jockeys can earn over a million dollars a year. The least successful will make less the $20,000 per year. The record for purse earnings in one year by a jockey is $23,354,960.00* set by Jerry Bailey in 2003. *These are the earnings of the horses, not the jockey. As a rule of thumb, a jockey’ s real earnings are approximately 7% of the horses’ earnings.

If there was a match between Zenyatta and Ruffian whom do you think would win and why?
I mean look at Zenyatta. She’s a perfect 10 for 10 like Ruffian was not racing outside her division prior to the match race . And she’s even taller than Ruffian. Now before you say it’ll never happen, i’m not stupid i know it won’t but it crosses my mind from time to time.
Actually, Zenyatta and Ruffian were about the same size, just shy of 17 hands tall.
Lucian Lauren, who was Secretariat’s trainer once said that Ruffian may be even better than Secretariat. She was undefeated in her first ten starts over distances from 5.5 furlongs to 1.5 miles with an average winning margin of 8 1/3.. she won her maiden race by 15 lengths and in record time. She was always on the lead in every race. She also set new stakes records in each of the eight stakes races she won. she won all of her ten races and when she was in the match race with Foolish Pleasure she was on the lead when she broke down.
Zenyatta has four races to go before she matches Personal Ensign’s 13 for 13 record. She has nine consecutive wins for her career, and was being considered for 2008 Horse Of The Year. She is suppose to be training for 2009, but the date of her debut has not yet been announced. No doubt that she is an excellent filly, and we will never know who would have won a race between the two great fillies. There is much speculation of certain horses being matched against another great one, but since it never happened, we will never truly know. But if it were to happen, My money would be on Ruffian.

What is the best bargain ticket for the Kentucky Derby?
I am going to 2009 derby and want to know a little about the best way to maximize my experience. Where is the best place (bargain wise) to watch the race live. Where to stay when coming in town from Nashville? How early to get there race day? Is the infield the best place to be for a racing and wagering fan?
I am posting a link that will give you some information on tickets, where to stay, etc. I am in Franklin, so I am familiar with the route you will take. Every year about 150,000 people attend the Derby and most of the good tickets are far gone by now. You can call Churchill downs office and talk with them about tickets if you like.
If you go to the infield you will not be able to see the race. There are many obstructions preventing the view of the track there. I would advise you to get there early, even though the race is late in the day. There is much to see and a lot of excitement. Since I don’t know how old you are I will tell you that the infield is mostly college age people and they are there for a party. Lots of drinking, etc. Have a great time at the Derby

Thanks, Bill. I am going to see Springsteen and have row 1 in sec. 328 seats 9, 10, 11. believe there are 28 seats in the row and I know the stage is the opposite endzone. Is seat 1 or 28 toward the stage?

Burgoo and the Kentucky Derby Burgoo King
“Burgoo King,” Winner of 1932 Kentucky Derby, “Bred in Old Kentucky”
A little trivia: “Kentucky Burgoo” is the celebrated stew which is served in Kentucky on Derby Day, at Political Rallies, Horse Sales and other outdoor events. Mr. J. T. Looney, of Lexington, is one of Kentucky’s most famous Burgoo-makers and it was for him that Mr. E. R. Bradley named his 1932 Kentucky Derby winner “Burgoo King”. The blanket of roses designed in 1931, by Mrs. Kingsley Walker for the Kentucky Derby winner was first worn in 1932 by “Burgoo King”. Burgoo King, chestnut colt, by Bubbling Over – Minawand by Lonawand, Winner 1932 Kentucky Derby and Preakness. His sire, Bubbling Over, won Kentucky Derby in 1926. Owned by Col. E.R. Bradley, Idle Hour Farm, Lexington, Ky.

2 lbs of pork shank
2 lbs of veal shank
2 lbs of beef shank
2lbs breast of lamb
1-4 lb chicken (baking hen)
8 quarts water
2 lbs of potatoes
2 lbs of onions
4 large carrots
2 green peppers
2 cups of chopped cabbage
1 1/4 quarts of tomato puree
2 cups/cans of whole corn/fresh is good too
3 red pepper pods
2 cups diced okra
2 cups lima beans
1 cup diced celery
salt and cayenne to taste
Tabasco sauce to taste
A-1 steak sauce to taste
worcestershire sauce to taste
Put all the meat in cold water and bring to a rapid boil. Simmer until it is tender enough to fall off the bones. Remove from stock and dice meat discard the bones.
Peel potatoes and onions, dice add to the stock along with the diced meat. Dice remaining ingredients except seasonings which will be added a little at a time during cooking until almost completed.
Stir frequently with a long handled paddle or spoon. Recipe should feed about 25 people. Cooking time will vary but the longer it is simmered the better it is. Cook until it is thick.
