Why do people still think its impossible to win long term at gambling? And that the bookie always wins?

With casino betting it is very different, everything is strictly controlled and in the casinos favour. You can not win long term in a casino because of the types of games you are playing. They have a casino edge, which cannot be manipulated into your favour. For instance a roulette table will pay you 35/1 for each number but because of the two zeros (or one in european roulette) there is actually 38 possible outcomes, hence why you cannot make money. But with sports betting and horse racing you have to remember the bookie is taking a gamble himself by offering odds against a certain event that he has no control of. He must guess the right probabilities and then offer odds (and a built in margin which will supposedly make him profit) accordingly. But bookies certainly do not always make money and where as a bookie must offer odds on any race or event, the astute bettor can pick and choose his investments very wisely and when he thinks that bookies calculations are flawed in his favour.

I don’t know if this was a statement or a question but i will answer by saying that you are right, casino games all have a house edge. The only game that does not have an edge is poker, all other games the odds are against you. But sports betting the line is not in your favor and is set by the casino to favor them. Now that’s not saying that you can’t pick a winners, but you have to know what you are doing to make money at it. I work as a poker dealer in a Las Vegas casino for over 5 years and i only know 2 people who make there living off of sports betting, you have to be very adept to win at sports betting, i myself don’t bet a lot of games because i have no edge over the games. If you can pick the winners then good for you and best of luck.
