Any advice for an aspiring race horse trainer?
I’m an aspiring race horse trainer looking for advice to learn more about how to become a race horse trainer and if is something I would like to seriously consider for the future. My name is Meredith and I’m a sixteen year old girl who is a sophomore in high school (two years before I go to college.)
I have been riding hunter/jumpers for six years and I have experience with turn in and turn out, grooming, feeding, and handling horses. I have helped with barn chores and I enjoy working with horses through their problems.
I know of Unversity of Arizona’s racetrack management program, but what I want to know is what being a race horse trainer really entiles. Any advice or information is greatly appreciated.
If you want to learn the only good way is to do like the other person suggested and find a track with a trainer who will take you on. You’ll start as a hot walker and work your way up if you work hard…..and I mean really hard. Below I’m leaving a description of what has been a typical day for me at CD
You’ll get to work by 5:30 am every day until you become the boss yourself and do so in all kinds of weather. You’ll have two year olds as well as older horses break up the hours of monotony with moments of sheer terror. You’ll spend about 6 hours a day at the track unless you have a race, or 6 like we just did, and be there all day on thanksgiving and whatever holiday the schedule takes up. You’ll get bruises, cuts, and hopefully only a few other minor injuries. Not to mention money gets a little tight if your win streak is a little sluggish. Then when you stand in the winners circle after trudging half a mile around the sloppy track you’ll say to yourself….”yeah it was worth it.”
