Barrel racing question !?
this year at fair, im running barrels.
What horse tack and items do i need?
should i place him on a certain diet?
should I get him shoed?
what else do i need?
Depending on what you already own, you might not need anything new as far as horse tack. I am guessing that you have a western saddle, pad, bridle, etc…
As other people have mentioned, you should get some roper reins. When you turn in Barrels you generally are holding on with one hand, and you will have to switch hands once, a single rein makes this much easier and safer.
Make sure that you have a western bit that is broken in the middle. When you ride Barrels, you use direct rein pressure (this means that to turn left, you pull the left rein) -no neck reining. A western bit such as a curb will NOT be suited for Barrels, find something that breaks in the middle with a moderate shank and a chin/curb strap.
If you do not already ride with a breast collar you may want to consider it. When you are riding in any speed events you want to think of your safety. If your cinch broke or became loose you could easily end up underneath your horse, a breast collar would prevent that.
I’m not sure what organization you are in but you should check out their dress code. Anticipate wearing jeans, boots, belt, and western shirt. Also plan on wearing helmet or cowboy hat and find out if there is a time penalty for your hat falling off. In some organizations your hat falling off will cost you a 5 sec penalty so you would need “dummy strings”.

As for diet & shoes, just keep doing what you are now.
