Questions about Thomas McCarthy, General Quarters trainer, (please see details)?
I know he is going on 76 and a retired High School teacher, but how old was he when he began training horses and where did he get his background to obtain a trainers license?
Also, was anyone watching the morning activity for each horse the week before the Kentucky Derby? While I obviously don’t know the horse personally, it seems like General Quarters was galloping 1 1/2 miles each day before the race, often on days when many others were just jogging or just walking the shed row – could he have been trained a bit too hard for the Derby? Notwithstanding the fact McCarthy also said he came back with a “mouth full of mud”.
His Kentucky Derby profile says he’s been involved in racing for a half century. It doesn’t say how he got his license but his grandfather was a jockey in Ireland.
I don’t think his horse was trained too hard. I think he’s just a little too slow. The mouth full of mud is a lame excuse. Most of the horses got mud in their face.
