What is the best bargain ticket for the Kentucky Derby?

I am going to 2009 derby and want to know a little about the best way to maximize my experience. Where is the best place (bargain wise) to watch the race live. Where to stay when coming in town from Nashville? How early to get there race day? Is the infield the best place to be for a racing and wagering fan?

I am posting a link that will give you some information on tickets, where to stay, etc. I am in Franklin, so I am familiar with the route you will take. Every year about 150,000 people attend the Derby and most of the good tickets are far gone by now. You can call Churchill downs office and talk with them about tickets if you like.
If you go to the infield you will not be able to see the race. There are many obstructions preventing the view of the track there. I would advise you to get there early, even though the race is late in the day. There is much to see and a lot of excitement. Since I don’t know how old you are I will tell you that the infield is mostly college age people and they are there for a party. Lots of drinking, etc. Have a great time at the Derby

A little trivia: “Kentucky Burgoo” is the celebrated stew which is served in Kentucky on Derby Day, at Political Rallies, Horse Sales and other outdoor events. Mr. J. T. Looney, of Lexington, is one of Kentucky’s most famous Burgoo-makers and it was for him that Mr. E. R. Bradley named his 1932 Kentucky Derby winner “Burgoo King”. The blanket of roses designed in 1931, by Mrs. Kingsley Walker for the Kentucky Derby winner was first worn in 1932 by “Burgoo King”. Burgoo King, chestnut colt, by Bubbling Over – Minawand by Lonawand, Winner 1932 Kentucky Derby and Preakness. His sire, Bubbling Over, won Kentucky Derby in 1926. Owned by Col. E.R. Bradley, Idle Hour Farm, Lexington, Ky.

2 lbs of pork shank
2 lbs of veal shank
2 lbs of beef shank
2lbs breast of lamb
1-4 lb chicken (baking hen)
8 quarts water
2 lbs of potatoes
2 lbs of onions
4 large carrots
2 green peppers
2 cups of chopped cabbage
1 1/4 quarts of tomato puree
2 cups/cans of whole corn/fresh is good too
3 red pepper pods
2 cups diced okra
2 cups lima beans
1 cup diced celery
salt and cayenne to taste
Tabasco sauce to taste
A-1 steak sauce to taste
worcestershire sauce to taste

Put all the meat in cold water and bring to a rapid boil. Simmer until it is tender enough to fall off the bones. Remove from stock and dice meat discard the bones.

Peel potatoes and onions, dice add to the stock along with the diced meat. Dice remaining ingredients except seasonings which will be added a little at a time during cooking until almost completed.

Stir frequently with a long handled paddle or spoon. Recipe should feed about 25 people. Cooking time will vary but the longer it is simmered the better it is. Cook until it is thick.

Kentucky Derby Cake or Louie’s Derby cake?

Recently I saw this cake made on the Food Network, but did not get the recipe. I have searched Food Network and every other cooking site I can find without sucess. It was made in a bakery in Louievelle, KY. I think the baker was a woman. I would love to have this recipe.
Thanks to both of you for the recipes. These are not the one I was looking for but they sound good. I’ll give them a try. I found the bakery that makes the “Louie’s Derby Cake”, but not the recipe. Probably won’t. They want $30.95 for the cake, plus shipping!

With all of the elements of a Southern mint julep cocktail, this cake is perfect for Kentucky Derby Day. The rich pound cake has a white chocolate ganache frosting with a light mint flavor to complement the bourbon butter sauce infused in the cake. Don’t wait for Kentucky Derby Day to make this cake. Even without the bourbon butter sauce and/or creme de menthe frosting, the cake will shine with a simple dusting of powdered sugar. For a sheet cake, shorten the cooking time to 35 to 40 minutes.
INGREDIENTS:
Cake:
3 cups cake flour
2 cups white sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup buttermilk
1 cup butter
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
4 eggs

Bourbon Butter Sauce:
1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar
1/3 cup butter
3 tablespoons water
2 teaspoons Bourbon whiskey

Mint Frosting:
2 cups (12-oz. pkg.) white chocolate chips
1 can (14 oz.) sweetened condensed milk (not evaporated milk)
1 teaspoon white creme de menthe liqueur or 1/2 tsp mint extract (see Note)
PREPARATION:
Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Grease and flour a 10-inch bundt pan.

Cake:
Whisk together flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, and baking soda in a large bowl.

“In a separate smaller bowl, combine buttermilk, butter, vanilla extract, and eggs.

Add wet ingredients to flour mixture. Beat at low speed for 1 minute, then increase to medium speed for 3 more minutes. Pour into prepared pan and smooth evenly around bundt center.

Going to the kentucky derby for a bachelor party!!!!!!!!?

I am a derby virgin and I am planning a bachelor party and I am in need of some Info. where is the best place to park an RV, best place to watch the race, any other insider tips that can make this weekend better?

No clue about the RV thing but as for best views it all depends on what you want to see. This coming year (2008) will be my 8th Derby! We have seen it all. Our first year there we saw a guy and a gal get escorted out in handcuff for having sex in themiddle of the infield! Traumatic for an 18 year old “derby Virgin!!!” lol Anyway as for the race. If you want to see the break really well as you come through the tunnel (the one after the gate where you pay with cash) into the infield immediately to your right is the track and grandstands. there is a little corner there that iskind of wedged into tsoem bushes. Basically it’s rigth there at the betting windows under the grandstand. to the right of the windows is a little slope and some bushes right up the slope is a lil clearing where you can set blankets and cahirs. It offers an AWESOME view of the start (here’s a link to pics i took from there one year)

My camera is a piece of crap and as you can tell there are 2 fences you have to aim through, I’m sure someone with a good camera could get better pics form the same vantage point. The 2 middle pics I posted are from the break of the Derby.

Directly opposite of the grandtsnad on the other sid eof the infield you can watch the final strecth with NO FENCES between you and the tracks!!! (well ok there is the rails and a couple of barriers but not the chainlink like pictured above. It afford great views and shots for pics of the drive for home.

Now if you want to see more than the horses trust me you can. lol I took my husband for the first time last year and when him and my friend’s boyfriend were going to get a beer they about fell over . They were walking towards the backstrecth and stumbled upon what they felt was gold! lol Some guys had mananeged to bring a “slip-n-slide” in and had set it up going down a very slight slope. All along the sides they were putting the empty beer bottles and had some how fanagled bags of ice off a couple of the vendors and had it scattered all over the slip and slide…. gals (drunk ones) were sliding down this thing topless!!!!! One gal even stripped down buck naked…. needless to say they were enthralled. lol either way you go about it , adventures await you in the Infield… Now here is something massively important if you actually are going to watch races too. Normally there are 12 races on the card Derby day. After the 11th race you can actually get into the grandstands!!! as soon as the winning horse crosses the line we gather our stuff up and head towards the stands. Waiting by the door until the bell rings for the 11th race’s break. As ssoon as that bell rings you can go in and watch literally from the rail. She then actually let him climb over and examine his feet and go into detail about what he needed to have done!!! she was sooo freaking cool! lol anyway either way ENJOY it is a trip to remember

My friend has this painting but I cant find any info on the Painter. So I dont know who to contact to find info on it either. I have talked with Katherine Veitschegger the Curator of Collections at the Kentucky Derby Museum and she has never seen this piece and has no clue on it. The painting is of a Kentucky derby winner Plaudit.
