Mathematicians in sports/horse betting?
Hello,
I am a mathematician and recently I have been investigating the use of mathematicians in hedge funds and such. But it seems to me that the same types of modeling and arbitrage techniques could be used in sports betting (and horses/dogs, etc). Are there people/companies that do this? I feel like it would be even easier to make money in THIS realm (as opposed to Wall Street) since nowadays there are tons of hedge funds all doing similar things, but it seems to be new in gambling…
The last word in your question is your answer. It’s called gambling for a reason. You can calculate all you want, but in the end, you’re still gambling. Unless you cheat the odds in your favor will never be 100%. That said, you can increase the odds in your favour by understanding the rules of the game and doing the math. I know nothing about hedge funds but in gambling terms you need to have deep enough pockets to take the “strain” of a run of losses. As long as you have enough money to stay in the game, and you are playing so that you win more often than you lose, in the long run you will make money. There are as many systems as there are gamblers and every gambler I’ve known has been broke.
I in no way mean to insult you and I’ve used words like gambling and game, play etc., ’cause that’s what you’re doing whether you wish to call it mathematics and hedge funds notwithstanding. I’ve seen and read about A math prof and a bunch of his students taking on casinos at blackjack. The way it was presented, it seems like brains beat the casino, but that’s simply not true. They won because they cheated and the only reason we heard about it at all is because they got caught.
I wish you the best of luck, and I mean that sincerely because in the end that’s what will mean the difference between a retirement fund and broke no matter how much thinking you do.

Calvin Borel Rachel Alexandra Horse Racing Hand Signed 16×20 Photograph 2009 Preakness Stakes Color
$151.99
On May 16, 2009 Borel won the Preakness Stakes on Rachel Alexandra (after that horse was sold following the Derby). This accomplishment marked the first time that a jockey won the first two legs of the Triple Crown on different horses, and Borel could have become the first jockey since Steve Cauthen to win the Triple Crown in 1978 with a win in the Belmont. A win would have made him only the secon…

Where to buy 2008 Kentucky Derby racing program other than at the track?
I want to buy a 2008 kentucky Derby program but not at the track. Does anyone know of any websites or locations in Louisville, Ky to purchase a program?
Check the Churchill Downs site and it should tell you where to purchase programs off track.
For instance in Texas, I purchase Lone Star Park programs at a Tom Thumb grocery store the day before after 4 pm

Borel to ride Rachel Alexandra, its official?
its official Borel has chosen to ride Rachel Alexandra in the Preakness Stakes. this has to be the first time a Kentucy Derby winning jockey has chose to not ride the Kentucky Derby winner in the Preakness and instead ride a different horse. he said Rachel Alexandra is a once in a lifetime type of horse and he couldnt pass up on that. what do you think of his choice and what does this tell us about Mine That Bird? do you think Rachel Alexandra is a once in a lifetime horse? anybody wanna take a stab at who will replace him aboard MTB?
Borel is great on the Churchill rail but not so much at other tracks. Could be a blessing in disguise for MTB’s connections. I’ve heard Mike Smith & Jeremy Rose are possible replacements.
I think no matter what happens, Borel comes out the loser. The general public is unfamiliar with Rachel, so he’ll look like a traitor to them. If MTB loses the Preakness, people will say it’s because his jockey deserted him.
If Rachel loses the Preakness, her fans will blame him. He’s not getting the rail on her in that race so he’s going to look like just another jockey.
Rachel is not guaranteed a spot in the Preakness. If there’s 14 entries she doesn’t get in. But MTB’s connections would be stupid to let Calvin ride him in the Preakness since he’s jumping ship to ride her in the Belmont.
So he just blew his chance at a Triple Crown. It’s a small chance, but it’s still a chance. He’s 42 so at his age it could very well be his last chance.
It remains to be seen if Rachel is once in a lifetime. I personally think a strong pace will be her undoing if she makes the Preakness field.

bookmakers rules……………?
if i have a bet ,
and i just back the s.p. favourite instaed of picking an exact horse ,
and the race is won by a JOINED FAVOURITE , WHAT HAPPENS ??
WHATS THE RULES ,
because a backed fav and a j/f won , and in my transactions it is recorded as won but the bookie hasnt paid me ?
If you backed a SP Fav and a joint fav wins then Uk bookies split you stake to cover both joint favourites.
Example £2 win on Fav
Jt fav wins at 4/1
Bet settled as
£1 win on jt fav and £1 win on other jt fav
giving return of £5
Rules in other bookies and other countries vary and sometimes the lowest racecard number is used if a joint favourite wins….seems a tad unfair to me.
