Why is it harder for Fillies to win an American Classic race?
Rachel Alexandra and Rags To Riches are fillies that recently won in the Preakness and Belmont but fillies haven’t beaten colts in those races for several decades? Why is it hard for fillies to outrun colts in these big races? Are fillies generally weaker physically?
The filly/colt may not be an issue to most but there is a difference and that’s why they write filly races. True there are fillies that are very capable and some tough, well built fillies that have the ability to run with the colts, but overall it is a lot harder on them. If you have never trained a filly you may not understand but most trainers do. Personally, I like when trainers train fillies with a light hand, and this is what they like, as some fillies are temperamental, go off their feed easily and, its hard to keep good weight on them to keep them strong. Most fillies are much smaller and light boned compared to colts. Horses like Rachel Alexandra and Rags to Riches are champions regardless of sex.

Calvin Borel Rachel Alexandra Horse Racing Hand Signed 16×20 Photograph 2009 Preakness Stakes Color
$151.99
On May 16, 2009 Borel won the Preakness Stakes on Rachel Alexandra (after that horse was sold following the Derby). This accomplishment marked the first time that a jockey won the first two legs of the Triple Crown on different horses, and Borel could have become the first jockey since Steve Cauthen to win the Triple Crown in 1978 with a win in the Belmont. A win would have made him only the secon…

Borel to ride Rachel Alexandra, its official?
its official Borel has chosen to ride Rachel Alexandra in the Preakness Stakes. this has to be the first time a Kentucy Derby winning jockey has chose to not ride the Kentucky Derby winner in the Preakness and instead ride a different horse. he said Rachel Alexandra is a once in a lifetime type of horse and he couldnt pass up on that. what do you think of his choice and what does this tell us about Mine That Bird? do you think Rachel Alexandra is a once in a lifetime horse? anybody wanna take a stab at who will replace him aboard MTB?
Borel is great on the Churchill rail but not so much at other tracks. Could be a blessing in disguise for MTB’s connections. I’ve heard Mike Smith & Jeremy Rose are possible replacements.
I think no matter what happens, Borel comes out the loser. The general public is unfamiliar with Rachel, so he’ll look like a traitor to them. If MTB loses the Preakness, people will say it’s because his jockey deserted him.
If Rachel loses the Preakness, her fans will blame him. He’s not getting the rail on her in that race so he’s going to look like just another jockey.
Rachel is not guaranteed a spot in the Preakness. If there’s 14 entries she doesn’t get in. But MTB’s connections would be stupid to let Calvin ride him in the Preakness since he’s jumping ship to ride her in the Belmont.
So he just blew his chance at a Triple Crown. It’s a small chance, but it’s still a chance. He’s 42 so at his age it could very well be his last chance.
It remains to be seen if Rachel is once in a lifetime. I personally think a strong pace will be her undoing if she makes the Preakness field.

What does “cross the reins” and “run down” mean with regard to horse racing?
I’m familiar with many equine terms, but while reading the coverage about Big Brown, these terms have come up. What exactly does a jockey do when he/she “crosses the reins”? It’s apparently a signal for the horse to run, but what are the mechanics of the action?
Big Brown “ran down” in the Preakness. Is that regarded as a fault, or is it commonplace? Is it an indicator of a conformation defect ? The only definition I could find said that it meant weak pasterns.
WHEN YOU RIDE
YOU HAVE YOUR REINS CROSSED NO ITS NOT A SIGNAL TO RUN ITS THE WAY WE HOLD THE REINS
Run downs are a bandage that help s the horse if if run’s down on his back or front pasterns
we use a cut out type of soft cloth that sticks to the leg and then wrap with a very light and short bandage
He does NOT HAVE TO BE WEAK THERE
HE MIGHT JUST RUN DOWN A BIT BECAUSE OF THE SURFACE OF THE TRACK
A horse like him that does run HARD might need them
again not all means he has a problem O.K.
