What Are The Main Organizations That Have A Large Impact On Thoroughbred Racing?

I need to know about the effects in England because is for an assignment

The Jockey Club is a registry, not a governing body. The Horse Racing Commission is the Governing body.

JC would be included as the main organization, as well as all the major tracks, http://www.jockeyclub.com/

National Thoroughbred Horse Racing Association : http://www.ntra.com/

This link contains state and national orgaizations involved as well: http://www.jockeyclub.com/industryLinks.asp

In retrospect, did Kent Desormeaux give Big Brown a bad ride in the Belmont Stakes?

I know this was widely discussed right after the race, but I’d like to hear some views at this time as we look back.

Although we cannot know for sure if it was Big Brown’s foot injury, just a bad day, the rail or the racetrack we still can speculate.

My best guess was that it was a bad ride, I maintain this position. When the gate opened, Big Brown could have been sent to a ground saving lead from the rail, instead he was taken back sharply which caused him to be very rank early then taken to the outside and was wide all the way, losing ground before eventually being pulled up.

D’Tara who won the race, is a nice kind of a horse even till this day but surely is nothing to “write home about” at all.

Thank you for reading this tirade and for your answers. So what do you all think?

I agree with you that Big Brown had a bad trip. I said so last year after the Belmont and I have seen no evidence to make me change my mind.

The Belmont surface was playing faster near the rail that day… as you got away from the rail, the surface got deeper and slower. Ignoring this, Kent took Big Brown very wide through the whole race and the horse had nothing left to finish the race. Big Brown broke slowly and got boxed in at the rail, but instead of getting the horse to relax behind horses, Kent goosed him twice trying to shove him through holes that weren’t really there. Then he finally got away from the rail, came around horses, and made no effort to get back to a ground saving trip.

There’s all kinds of excuses for the horse… the quarter crack and the loose shoe. But to me, what really lost the race for this horse was hubris. The connections thought that they had the race in the bag… they thought they were owning/training/riding Pegasus and that the horse could overcome absolutely everything. Between the Preakness and Belmont, Big Brown had the quarter crack and missed a lot of training. I’m all about having a fresh horse for a 12 furlong race, but you also need a fit horse who’s prepared to go 12 furlongs for the first time in his life. Dutrow gave Big Brown a little vacation in those 3 weeks instead of preparing him for the race. Then Kent took over on race day and assumed the horse could overcome being asked for run during the first furlong to get running room, then overcome the wide trip and the deep track. As it turns out, the horse wasn’t quite that good. It’s disappointing because if the horse had been handled properly, we could have seen a Triple Crown winner.

Note — regarding answers that have come after mine:
I also have no problem with Kent pulling Big Brown up in the stretch… better safe than sorry. My answer is limited to the first 10 furlongs of the race. Just thought I’d clarify.

Should the U.S. provide for the security of the world, as John McCain says we must?

On ‘Meet the Press’ today, McCain said, paraphrasing: that it is unfortunate, but being the Superpower means we are responsible for the security of the world. Naturally, Russert didn’t pick up and follow up on this rather important claim, since, of course, he is more interested in the horse race than in the meaning, implications and consequences of such ideas. Nor is it likely that the rest of the media will inquire about this claim about the role of the U.S. in the world.

So, is the U.S. responsible for the world’s security? Should it be? If so, why? If this responsibility comes with being the Superpower, why should we continue to be this Superpower, i.e. does the average citizen really benefit from this status?

There is some responsibility when the country is a world power but America cannot be everywhere, nor should the world expect it to be their policeman. Other countries have responsibilities also and that is why, in part, NATO still exists and other alliances. If there should be a world policeman it should be the UN but they have never really been able to get their act together to do this other than as peacekeepers in a noncombative role.
Also, I don’t believe the average citizen really benefits directly unless there is an actually direct threat to the country in the long run.

Where in Kentucky to move w/ horses? (not racehorses)?

I’m looking to move from built-up Maryland to somewhere very rural & scenic, and Kentucky seems to have some nice areas. Where would you recommend?

So far Danville and Houstonville seem nice & have affordable land. Casey Creek area looks even cheaper. Any comments? Anywhere else I should be looking?

How is the property tax situation?

I want a farm because I have horses (NOT racehorses, no interest in being near their farms). I want friendly & neighborly, but not drunk rednecks shooting at everything that moves. I don’t mind middle-of-nowhere. I do mind anything resembling the movie Deliverance… scary!

And are there equestrian magazines/newsletters for Kentucky (that are NOT about racing or TB/STB racing farms)?

Thanks in advance!
thanks for answers so far

please.. anyone else have any advice?

Best rural area to live in?

County with lowest property taxes?

thank you!

Irvington has a lot of nice farm property, and it is very rural and quite. I live in Louisville and we have family in Irvington.

Am i light enough to be a Thoroughbred jockey?

I’m a 20yo female i’m 5′5 and weigh 110 pounds. I’ve already started off as an exercise rider for my local racetrack here in Phoenix. I don’t come from a family of jockeys but i’ve dreamed of becoming one since i was little. Do i need to shed anymore pounds? I love the horses have always had a passion for them though i know that isn’t enough. My ultimate dream is to ride a Triple Crown winner and/or a Breeder’s Cup race winner. I plan on learning what i can from older more experienced jockeys preferably retired. I’ve already started a really strict diet.

As an apprentice jockey, the horses you ride will carry 5 pounds less than their assigned weight. In many very low level races, the assigned weight is 112… that means that you’d carry 107. Since your tack will be some of that weight, you’ll probably need to be 105. So you could lose another couple pounds, but you’re pretty good being 110 already.

Good luck! I’d love to be a jockey but I didn’t really consider it until too late.

Horse Betting Options

Merchandise & Articles

I won less than i thought at the bookies on the Grand National, can someone please explain?

I put a bet on the Grand National at the weekend and got 2nd and 4th horse come in, i thought i was going to claim more than i got, let me tell you the details and hopefully some1 can work it out and explain it to me…

I put £2 each way on 6 horses(£12 total bet), i cant remember each horse but they included: Comply Or Die (2nd) and State of Play (4th).. I selected the option that gives you the odds when you place the bet, not when the race starts, these did change on one but only by one or two.

So i won on two of my horses with the £2 each way on both… When i went to collect my winnings she scanned the bar code and said it was only £8.50! i didn’t say anything because i just figured it had to be right, and i am an inexperienced better. but is this correct?

I think I may see what your confusion is.

Firstly if you put £2 each way on a horse it actually costs £4.
If you had put £2 each way on 6 horses it would have cost you a total of £24.

I think you have put £1 each way on your 6 horses and the two places have both been paid at the starting prices which were both 14/1.

These would give a return of £4.50 each totaling £9 which is in the ballpark!

If you had put £2 each way on your slip for 6 horses but only put £12 total stake they will have divided the stakes equally so put £1 each way on each horse.

The only beef you could have is that you wanted to take the price but the slip wasn’t scanned properly.

It wouldn’t have made a huge difference to the place payout anyway.

Just remember an each way bet costs twice as much as there are two parts to it,the win and the place part.

Ask again if you’re stuck.

Betting on Win/Place/Show?

I was curious how important is the dollar amount when betting. Say for example I’m betting on the top 4 odds in that particular race. Is there a dollar amount that you would have to bet to insure a break-even point if only 1 or 2 of the horses make a payout?

If that is confusing or doesn’t make any sense let me know I can clarify.

This question asks if you bet the favorite to WPS, 2nd favorite WPS and so on how much should you bet to make money. Well it depends on the number of horses. A large field i.e. the Derby, this is not a bad way to bet as the favorite is normally 4-1 or more so you will get a good place and show return. Most experts consider a show bet a sucker bet. Example if the favorite finishs 3rd it may pay $2.40 for a two dolllar bet. But you betted $2 WPS…you lose. Get a handicapping book from the Daily Racing Form…
