Pletcher got his training start under some of the all-time greats working with Charlie Wittingham and most prominently with D. Wayne Lukas. Under Lukas Pletcher took over the east coast string of horses until eventually going out on his own in the mid 1990’s. He wouldn’t break onto the scene as a major player until 2004 when he earned a win in the Kentucky Oaks with Ashado and 2 Breeder’s Cup victories with Ashado and Speightstown.
Although Pletcher was flourishing on the track, it would take him 16 years to saddle his first Kentucky Derby winner when Super Saver won in 2010. He has since added 1 more Derby to the trophy case with Almost Dreaming in 2017.
Pletcher holds a number of records including earnings in a single year and most stakes victories in a year. He has won a number of the marquee events in horse racing including the Kentucky Oaks twice, the Travers twice, all three legs of the Canadian Triple Crown though in different years, and 8 different divisions of the Breeder’s Cup. The only American Triple Crown race Pletcher has yet to win is the Preakness.
Pletcher has won a total of 7 Eclipse Awards for Outstanding Trainer dating back to his first in 2004.
