Multiple grade 1 winner Tiz the Law was named the 2019 New York-Bred Horse of the Year April 6 by the New York Thoroughbred Breeders.

Tiz the Law had to receive the award remotely since the NYTB was unable to host the annual event at the Saratoga National Golf Club in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. The event was put off due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Along with their sponsor, the New York Thoroughbred Breeding and Development Fund, divisional title announcements were made. The 2019 New York-bred champions were announced through NYTB's website and social media channels.

There was also a microsite that was launched for a video presentation produced by PM Advertising, highlighting the top performances of the nominees and winners.

Tiz the Law

Because of his impressive juvenile campaign, Sackatoga Stable's Tiz the Law, a son of Constitution, was named the 2019 Horse of the Year. One of his most important wins came in the Champagne Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park.

Tiz the Law was also chosen by voters as the 2019 champion 2-year-old male. He is 2-for-2 at age 3, with victories in the Holy Bull Stakes (G3) and Curlin Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park. He is at the top of the list of entries for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve, which has been postponed until Sept. 5.

Other Awards

Chester and Mary Broman were named New York's top breeders in 2019. It was their fourth straight year and seventh time overall taking the title.

They won the award for outstanding breeders in 2004, 2011, 2014, and 2016-18. The Bromans won 82 races, 13 stakes, and earned $3,775,911 in 2019.

They are responsible for four divisional champions in 2019, including dual New York champion Pauseforthecause. She scored the champion older dirt female and champion female sprinter.

Linda Rice was named the top trainer of New York-breds in 2019, after already taking the title six times in the last 10 years, in 2009, 2010, 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2017.

She won 76 races last year with New York-breds, scored seven New York-bred stakes wins, and earned $4,234,018. She is the trainer for Newly Minted, the Broman-bred 2019 champion 3-year-old filly.

Jockey Manny Franco had the most New York-bred wins and earnings for the year. He has 94 New York-bred wins, scored seven stakes on Empire State-breds, and earned $6,346,925. Franco is the regular rider of Tiz the Law. He has been aboard for every one of Tiz the Law's races since the colt won his Saratoga Race Course debut.

A ballot of New York turf writers, handicappers, chart callers, and racing analysts conducted by NYTB are responsible for selecting the 2019 New York-bred Horse of the Year and all divisional champions.
